Secret to Long Life?
10 Critical Genes

Discovery of up to 10 critical genes, by researchers at Harvard Medical School, may portend increases in life spans and the quality of life for the aging via development of drugs to inhibit development of cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, and dementia.

The key? A section of chromosome four that was found, in a study of 137 100-year-olds and their brothers and sisters aged 91 to 99, to contain up to 10 disease-fighting genes.

Do these individuals represent the key factors in a small number of genes, for both increased life expectancy and good health? Only time will tell, as this startling scientific exposition is explored and tested in the coming years.

Africans Seek Recognition of Slavery as Crime Against Humanity

Coalition of 40 non-governmental African organizations, on Thursday, August 23, in Dakar, called for slavery to be recognized as a crime against humanity, and demanded compensation.

Amnesty International said compensation was secondary, and instead argued that the history of colonialism and oppression be historically recognized in history books throughout the world.

Since it's difficult to isolate those responsible for slavery, since there are no slaves or slave owners left, financial compensation is also difficult even though the rights to justice, of those victimized and their descendants, must be addressed.

Drug-Testing Shortcuts Costing Lives

Bayer's Baycol and, from an unrelated source, a so-called "cancer vaccine", tested on 200 terminally ill patients, are revealing dangerous flaws in the testing modality used in Germany.

Bayer, a German-based pharmaceutical giant, earlier this month had to suspend the distribution of the Baycol anti-cholesterol drug. It may have been responsible for the deaths of 52 people and 1,100 may have been crippled by its use.

In an unrelated and disquieting consequence of the lax German drug-testing laws, a scientist from a prestigious university claimed to have discovered a "cancer vaccine". After it was tested on 200 terminally ill patients at Göttingen University, it was discovered to be a sham, and many of the patients are now dead.

Ironically, the scientist's only evidence for the "cancer vaccine" was a photo of vanishing cancer cells. No other proof was offered and no one had duplicated his findings, as would be normally practiced, yet the scientist received a prestigious medical prize for the "discovery". After an agreement was signed with a German company to manufacture the "vaccine", the tests began.
