Emotions
+ Reason = Morality?
In
a detailed study, scientists have found evidence that emotions
play a critical role in moral decisions.
The
study revealed that in the event of an inevitable event (a train
crash whereby 2 choices were offered, one with the death of
5 on track 1 and the other with the death of 1 on track 2),
no emotions were involved in the decision that the death of
1 on track 2 was preferable.
However,
in the the event of an inevitable event (a train crash whereby
2 choices were offered, one with the death of 5 on track 1 and
the other with the death of 1 pushed onto the track in order
to save the lives of the 5), emotions were critically involved
and most responded that the sacrifice of the 1 was immoral,
choosing instead the death of the 5.
In
both cases, sacrifice of 1 to save 5 was the choice, but the
emotional area of the brain inhibited active participation
in the sacrifice of 1 for 5.

Wind-Powered
Buildings
In
the future, buildings with integrated wind turbines could produce
from 20 to 100 percent of a building's energy needs.
Wind
power is considered to be more cost effective and more space
efficient than solar power. Renewable power is under intensive
study in the United Kingdom as a goal of 10 percent of energy
via renewal resources has been set by the UK for the year 2010.
